Invitation Verses: Lines for the Top of the Card
One-line, two-line, three-line and four-line verses for wedding invitations, programs and menus — collected by Today’s Weddings readers since 1999.
A short verse at the top of an invitation sets the tone before the reader reaches a single name. It is entirely optional — the most formal invitations carry none — but a well-chosen line can say something about the wedding that the formal wording can’t.
Where it goes. At the very top of the card, centered, often in a smaller or italic type, with space before the formal wording begins. It never replaces the wording itself: the invitation still has to say who is hosting, who is marrying, and when and where. Our invitation wording guide sets out the correct form for every family situation.
How long. The more formal the wedding, the shorter the verse. A single line sits easily above engraved, traditional wording; a four-line verse suits a warmer, less formal invitation.
Where else. The same verses work beautifully on the front of a ceremony program, at the top of a menu, on favor tags and on scrolls and bookmarks for guests.
